By saturating the surface of the lumber, the Wood Defender® product penetrates into the substrate leaving the fence with an even, uniform coating.

Some of the materials include:

  • High quality, deep penetrating natural oils used to replenish and revive the composition of the wood
  • Highest quality trans-oxide and finely ground iron oxide pigments that lessen the damaging affect of harsh UV rays while providing ample color choices for consumers
  • UV inhibitors to further lessen the effects of harmful UV rays and keep the color consistent through the duration of the warranty
  • Synthetic resins designed to promote maximum adhesion and penetration to the wood while beautifying the finished appearance of the wood structure
  • The latest available mildewcides and fungicides to repel the growth of harmful mildew and fungus spores that decay wood and turn the fence gray in appearance
  • Water-repellent silicone to repel water, decreasing the damage associated with warping, swelling and cupping
  • Unique dispersants and anti-settling agents used to keep the product consistent in its container and lessen the amount of stirring required prior to application

No back brushing is required. The products are superior to competitive products that leave runs, drips and an uneven appearance.

The fact that this product is so easy to apply coupled with the fact that it wipes off most non-porous surfaces makes it the contractors' choice.

While not a daily occurrence, you may find yourself staining fence built with metal poles. This may look like a daunting task to clean these poles but we have a simple method can use. After completely staining the fence and doing other cleanup on the jobsite (by doing these other steps it will give the stain time to soak into the wood), you can a pump up garden sprayer with mineral spirits to clean poles. By drizzling the mineral spirits at the top of the and allowing it to run down, it will remove any stain on pole along with any stain between the pole and the brackets. You may have to come back with a dry rag and lightly wipe few spots but this method can be a huge time saver.

Stain protection is accomplished mainly by three methods; pigment, vehicle and bio protection. These three methods are the materials left on and in the wood and endure ongoing exposure to the elements, water, temperature fluctuation and ultraviolet light. To effectively protect and preserve the wood from all the elements, there has to be a comprehensive formula that works in a synergistic manner to refract ultra violet light, repel water while allowing the wood to expand and contract and fight micro organism attack (mildew/fungus).

It is a proven fact that Semi-Transparent stains do hold up better than Transparent stains in harsh hot climate areas due to their ability to better block U.V. sun light. The Semi-Transparent stains have a high pigment loading as opposed to the Transparent stains, providing a “hiding” effect, hence the term Semi-Transparent. Transparent stains use expensive Trans-Oxide pigments which have been known to block U.V. light as well and allow for the “transparent” look, but have limitations due to the lower pigment loading and must be selective for intended end use.

For example, when staining an older (aged) fence that has been weathered the Semi-Transparent stain functions and looks better in appearance than the Transparent stain, by hiding all the discolorations and imperfections in the wood, yielding a more uniform look. On the other hand when staining a new clear cedar fence (selective) the transparent will show the natural grain of the wood along with protecting the cedar from darkening or discoloring.

In conclusion, both stains have their place and serve a purpose. The Semi-Transparent stain is more widely used because of its “heavy duty” formula, offering a universal product for multiple uses, new and aged wood alike. Transparent stains work well in selective areas offering a natural look allowing for the natural wood grain to be highlighted; knowingly more re-applications will be required in harsh climates versus the Semi-Transparent stain.

Ease of application – Wood Defender Fence Stains are formulated for ease of application. Our Fence stains have been formulated for the professional contractor with input from many successful applicators of the product. The professional fence stainer realizes the benefit of a product that goes on easy and does not require back brushing. When the surface of the fence is saturated the stain will penetrate into the lumber and provide a uniform finish. The Wood Defender products are superior when compared to competitive products that require back brushing or back rolling to hide runs, drips, and lap marks. The other main advantage of the Wood Defender Fence Stain line is that it will wipe off most non porous surfaces. The stain is easily cleaned off of most painted surfaces, autos, glass, siding, smooth brick, and lawn furniture. Wood Defender “NOTHING ELSE COMPARES”

Recoat ability – Wood Defender Fence stains utilize a modified oil formula that enhances penetration and does not leave a surface film. The lack of a film on the surface of the wood makes re-coats a snap. In many circumstances if the stain is in good condition on the fence there will be absolutely no prep work required for a re-spray. The ease of recoats allows Wood Defender users to establish a fence maintenance program with their customers, returning every two to three years to re-spray the fence.

Longevity – Wood Defender Fence Stains offer a very conservative warranty. It is common for the stain to look good on the fence for up to twice the length of the warranty. The wood Defender Fence Stains are formulated to resist the harmful effects of U.V rays, water damage, severe humidity, and mildew. This means the fence will have a longer life protected from nature’s harsh elements.

When all considerations are made it is easy to see why Wood Defender has become the contractor’s choice for fence staining. We offer a product to fit each fence owners liking. We offer products that are up to the task of satisfying discriminating contractors, but yet easy enough for a typical do it yourselfer to apply. How to Stain a Fence

Mar 07 2011

When answering the question, “How to stain a fence”, start with the right product. Standard Paints Inc. recommends two oil based products designed for fences in the Wood Defender® product line: Semi-Transparent Fence Stain and Transparent Fence Stain. Each of these products are formulated specifically for fence staining applications and incorporates the latest technology and finest raw materials available to give them unparalleled performance.

Recommended Use

Wood Defender® fence stain is designed to be used on exterior wood fences. Both the Wood Defender Semi-Transparent and Transparent Fence Stains work extremely well on:

  • Pine
  • Cedar
  • Spruce
  • Redwood
  • Pressure-treated
  • Weathered and previously stained wood fence

The recommend spread rate for unsealed wood is 150-250 sq ft per gallon. When applied at this rate, the Wood Defender line of Fence Stains will provide you with a uniform application every time! Wood Defender also sells fence staining equipment specifically developed for this use.

Preparing The Fence

As with any staining project it is important that your substrate (wood fence) is properly prepared. The surface of your fence must be clean, dry and free of dust, dirt, mildew, oil, water and other contaminants. Weathered wood must be bleached prior to staining to kill any mildew spores present.

How To Stain A Fence

Wood Defender recommends the following steps when staining a fence:
  • Wood Defender Stains can be applied by spraying, brushing or rolling so long as total saturation of wood surface is achieved
  • Test color choice in an inconspicuous area before proceeding with the project
  • Stir stain thoroughly
  • Apply without thinning
  • Apply stain above 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius)
  • Allow 90 Days for total cure on Wood Defender Fence Stains
  • We recommend the use of a respirator while spraying
  • Do not apply product if rain is expected within 24 hours

By saturating the surface of the lumber, the Wood Defender® product penetrates deep into the wood leaving the fence with an even, uniform finish. Once you have completed the application process, we are ready for the clean up.

The Clean Up

Wood Defender Fence Stains wipe off most metal, glass and non-porous surfaces; therefore, clean up is less time consuming. Metal gate hardware and fences built with metal poles can be wiped off with a dry rag to remove stain. Wood Defender EZ Clean is the recommended product for removing the stain off surfaces you didn’t intended it being on. Wood Defender EZ Clean will remove overspray off of windows, air conditioners, gutters, brick, cars, garage doors, pool equipment and actually leave the jobsite cleaner then it was when you started!

Dispose of stain soaked rags in a metal container filled with water. This will alleviate the possibility of spontaneous combustion.
